Industry Gives Back

LASD M.E.T. Partnership & Autism Awareness Month

The City of Industry continues to reaffirm its commitment to inclusion, awareness, and mental wellness through a series of events and initiatives supporting individuals with autism and their caregivers.

As the mother of an autistic child, Industry Mayor Cory Moss has been a steadfast advocate for autism awareness. In 2016, she spearheaded a partnership between the City of Industry and the Industry Sheriff’s Department to offer deputies a POST-certified training course focused on autism and mental health. Since then, hundreds of LASD deputies, police officers, and first responders from the region have completed this specialized training, led by Kate Movius, founder of Autism Interaction Solutions. The training provides deputies with behavioral tools and best practices for communicating with and de-escalating situations involving individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.

The training also includes sensory exercises to help participants gain first-hand insight into what it’s like to live with autism or mental disabilities. Autistic co-trainers are present to share personal experiences, helping law enforcement better understand how to engage with individuals across the autism spectrum—whether verbal, non-verbal, or in between.

In 2023, the City celebrated the opening of the new LASD M.E.T. Regional Training Facility, a 5,000-square-foot space equipped with classrooms and interactive simulators. The facility delivers crisis response training with a strong emphasis on autism awareness, ensuring that local, state, and federal deputies are prepared to respond with empathy and care.

This year, M.E.T. and the City of Industry launched the inaugural Let’s T.E.A.M. Up! (Together for Education, Awareness, and Mental Wellness) event at the Industry Hills Expo Center. Hundreds of attendees—including first responders, educators, nonprofit leaders, and families—participated in a day filled with workshops, demonstrations, and resource sharing. Topics ranged from autism safety protocols to mental health strategies for caregivers, with support from key partners such as Autism Interaction Solutions, NAMI, LA FOUND, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
