Bob
Rope
was
a
graduate
of
the
University
of
California
at
Los
Angeles
where
he
received
a
Bachelors
degree,
a
general
secondary
teaching
credential
and
a
Master
of
Arts
degree
in
education.
He
was
a
teacher
in
the
Upland
School
District.
In
that
district,
he
taught
English,
algebra,
physical
education,
business
training
and
science.
In
addition,
he
was
coach
of
the
basketball
and
football
teams.
Rope
was
a
veteran
of
World
War
II,
serving
as
a
Navy
officer.
He
was
a
former
investigator
in
the
office
of
the
city
prosecutor
for
the
City
of
Long
Beach,
later
being
promoted
to
administrative
assistant.
In
1953
Mr.
Rope
was
appointed
executive
assistant
to
the
Regional
Planning
Commission
of
Los
Angeles
County.
During
that
time,
he
attended
the
University
of
Southern
California
where
he
obtained
a
Masters
degree
in
public
administration.
Rope
was
appointed
the
first
city
manager
of
the
City
of
Industry
at
the
time
of
the
citys
incorporation
in
1957.
During
the
13
years
he
was
city
manager,
the
assessed
valuation
in
the
City
of
Industry
had
risen
from
$16
million
to
$125
million.
The
number
of
plants
located
in
the
City
of
Industry
increased
from
53
to
over
300.
The
labor
force
increased
from
2500
to
over
30,000.
Rope
had
long
been
active
in
civic
affairs.
He
was
a
member
of
the
Elks,
Moose,
Optimists,
Lions,
American
Legion,
Industry
Manufacturers
Council
and
other
organizations.
In
addition
he
was
active
in
various
professional
organizations
including
the
International
City
Managers
Association,
the
California
Contract
Cities
Association
and
the
San
Gabriel
Valley
City
Managers
Association.
Bob
Rope
was
a
resident
of
Whittier,
and
married
with
two
sons.
He
died
on
November
17,
1975
of
lung
cancer.
In
his
honor,
the
BOB
ROPE
FOUNDATION
FOR
CANCER
CARE
AND
RESEARCH
was
established
by
his
friends
shortly
after
his
passing.
